Trash Tips from Champion Waste

Background

Since the mid-1970s, Stonewall Manor residents have pooled their resources and negotiated for lower rates on their trash collection service which is currently managed by Champion Services Waste. It was also an effort by the community to limit the number of trucks driving through the neighborhood. Our arrangement is voluntary; and new and any non-participating residents are welcomed and encouraged to join the SMCA Consolidated Trash Service.

About Champion

Champion Services Inc. (DBA ©CSWaste) is a family owned and operated business with over 30 years’ experience in providing solid waste management and recycling programs in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. In just over 20 years Champion has become one of the Washington Metropolitan area’s most thriving waste companies by coupling old fashioned work ethic with cutting edge technology and savvy business maneuvers.

Champion prides itself on providing exceptional service at competitive prices. They have cut out the hidden costs of waste and recycling removal while maintaining a stellar reputation for quality of service and responsiveness.

Champion drivers all possess impeccable driving records. Their teams leave our neighborhood spotless, very rarely missing even the smallest article of debris. Champion only observes 3 holidays (see below). Their trucks have been known to be out when other companies are not, delaying services for only the most serious weather conditions. In these rare incidents, service always resumes on the next scheduled collection date.

Request to Join SMCA Trash Service

Residents wishing to participate in the SMCA Consolidated Trash Service or if you have any issues, payment information, or general questions about trash services please contact the treasurer, Tatiana Depaz Glennie, at SMCATrashFund@gmail.com.

Champion Service Schedule

Place items on curbside by 6 a.m. of the pick-up day, but not earlier than the previous evening, if at all possible.  Placing items in covered containers is appreciated since this helps prevent contents from being scattered by the wind or animals.

  • Once a week trash-pick up is each Tuesday, twice a week is on Tuesdays and Fridays

  • Recycle items are collected on Wednesdays, and

  • Yard debris items are collected seasonally (April – December) on Wednesdays.

Note: There is no trash collection on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. In addition, the SMCA covenants state that we will not put out trash earlier than the evening before pick-up day, as it helps keep the community looking well-kept.

Bulk Pick-Up

If you have large items such as furniture, appliances, etc. this will require a call to Champion for a special pickup. There will be a fee for such items. Certain bulk items are prohibited: recyclables, yard debris, hazardous waste, rocks dirt, construction materials, tires, and masonry materials.

Champion also offers a separate service for bulk services on an expedited basis.  This service is HaulShare and can be obtained by contacting Champion directly or visiting the website at https://www.haulshare.co/home .

Current Rates

In the past rates with Champion for twice a week trash pick-up had been locked in since September 1, 2015 via a long-term contract between the SMCA and Champion.   However, in 2019 the SMCA President unilaterally entered into a 3 year contract with Champion which ensured that annual rate increases would occur beginning with the first quarter of each subsequent calendar year.  Therefore, for current rates please contact the SMCA Trust Fund treasurer or check The Communique⸍, the community newsletter, for the most recent rate information. The pickup schedule has now been reduced to once a week on Tuesdays in accordance with Fairfax County guidelines.

As of December 2020 we have moved to electronic billing. Contact SMCATrashFund@gmail.com to learn how to sign up for the Trash Fund as well as electronic billing. Finally, please remember that your payment checks are not going directly to Champion Services. They are going into a trust fund, and money from that fund is used to pay the monthly bill. If you don’t pay, you are essentially borrowing from your neighbors, and this is inappropriate.

Caution: In an effort to avoid the theft of checks, please mail checks. Deposit of checks in the mailbox is not permitted. Local Police have stated that if the Treasurer receives a lot of foot traffic to his residence, it might alert criminals from outside the neighborhood of the potential for stealing a lot of checks. In addition. using mailboxes by persons other than employees of the USPS is illegal.

Terms and Conditions

In an effort to keep costs down and to avoid paying yearly rental fees for the use of bins; residences are required to purchase their own.

To keep rates low, we do not bill individual homeowners except under special circumstances when payments are late and/or overdue. The monthly SMCA newsletter, which is delivered to your door, provides a reminder notice to all residents. Please pay on the appropriate due date to avoid payment problems. Payment due dates are done quarterly and are:

  • March 1,

  • June 1,

  • September 1,

  • December 1.

Late Payments

The trust fund cannot subsidize late payments.

  • If a payment is received by the Treasurer after the 15th of the month, it counts as a late payment. The Treasurer will remind the member that the payment is due by the end of the month or service could be suspended.

  • If there is a second late payment within a two-year period, $5 billing fees could be levied on that payment and subsequent payments for at least one year.

  • If there is a third late payment within a two-year period, eligibility to participate in the SMCA Trash Services could be lost unless special arrangements are made. Any questions please contact Tamera Siminow at SMCATrashFund@gmail.com

Yard Debris

Yard Debris will be picked up on Wednesday’s from April-December. The number of bags permitted for curbside pick-up is limited to 10 per household. During the fall leaf collection season  the number of bags permitted increases to 15. From January – March 2 bags of yard debris are permitted to be picked up on regular trash pick-up days. Bundles of branches count as equivalent to bags of yard debris.

In accordance with County regulations, please place yard debris into clear plastic or paper bags. Twigs and small branches may be bundled with twine into 3-foot lengths. As a rule of thumb, if it’s too heavy for you, it’s too heavy for the trash collectors. Do not leave rocks, logs, stumps, or other such items out for collection.

Recycling

Pick-Ups are Wednesdays.
